It’s time to talk about the menopause

It’s time to talk about the menopause

There’s a lot of information in the media about menopause right now. It’s a normal and natural life stage for women, but it can be a tough one. According to the British Menopause Society, menopausal symptoms affect more than 75% of women.

So, whilst not all women going through the menopause will experience menopausal symptoms, the majority will and over 25% describe severe symptoms.

Hormone Replacement Therapy
Much has been written about the potential benefits of HRT, but in practice only about half of the women who try it wish to continue. Breast engorgement or the return of menstruation may be more acceptable for some than for others, but even without side effects, the benefit in some women is disappointing. Besides this, many women remain uneasy about taking hormones for prolonged periods of time, and one cannot yet entirely reassure them.

Dietary adjustments and supplementation
Dietary adjustment has been found to be very helpful. Oriental cultures have historically consumed high levels of soy, and research has demonstrated that it is linked to a lower incidence of many degenerative diseases and in particular certain cancers. Soy Isoflavones are also particularly associated with alleviating menopause symptoms. It should be noted that Asian women consume a lot of soy in their diet, which is also considered a significant factor in their relatively modest incidence of menopausal symptoms.

Our Menopause Support product is made from 100% natural Soy Isoflavones. Our Foodstate Soy Isoflavones are isoflavonoids derived from the soy germ, and are classified as Phytoestrogens due to their ability to bind to estrogen receptors which prevents true estrogens from occupying these receptors.

100% natural Isoflavones made from the soy germ, are shown in studies to:

  • Promote healthy bones
  • Promote a healthy heart
  • Improve gut micro flora
  • May reduce symptoms associated with the menopause

The soy germ is rich in phytonutrients and as well as its isoflavone content, it contains 40 additional health-supporting nutrients. The Menopause Support product should be seriously considered for those experiencing menopausal symptoms.

As well as our Menopause Support product, the following supplements are known to be helpful:

Multi-Vitamin & Mineral is a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutritional factors formulated to help support the body under stress when experiencing a busy or hectic lifestyle.

Multi Antioxidant with Co-Q10 is known to inhibit many factors associated with menopause. Anti-Oxidants are known to be helpful in reducing the hot flushes associated with menopause. The antioxidants in this product are: Selenium, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Co-Enzyme Q10.

Karoshil contains a broad spectrum of synergistic nutrients that help regulate metabolic function and help reduce symptoms of menopause. This product contains predominantly B Vitamins but also Selenium and Eleutherococcus, which is Siberian Ginseng, and known to lessen the effect of oestrogen withdrawal for women experiencing menopause.

Magnesium helps to provide support during the menopause, and for many women this mineral is in short supply. Magnesium is ‘energy yielding’, i.e. it provides energy, but also supports better sleep patterns and muscle cramps.

Vitamin B Complex is a foodstate multi-nutrient containing all 8 B vitamins and Vitamin C. It is also an ‘energy-yielding’ supplement and supports the nervous system and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.

Probiotic E505 contains 8 healthy probiotic strains and 1 prebiotic. The importance of a healthy gut cannot be underestimated for our health, but is also associated with a reduction in menopausal symptoms of hot flushes, tiredness, poor sleep, aching joints and increased abdominal fat.

Calcium and Vitamin D support healthy bones. Avoid ordinary calcium supplements, only take foodstate calcium. Most calcium supplements do not support our bones and can actually make them worse. Vitamin D helps us absorb calcium. Foodstate Vitamin D is the ‘active’ form rather than the undesirable ‘storage’ form.

Additional help and support
Homeopathy has been found to be of value with menopause. A modified vegetarian diet is also beneficial. Meditation is also of value, as is massage.

Additional comment
It is important that attention is paid to the balance between acid-forming and alkaliforming foods. The optimum balance is around 60% alkali-forming to acid-forming. See Acid Forming and Alkali Forming guidelines. An active programme of reducing stress can reduce severe hot flushes. In addition, a three-day non-citrus cleansing extending to include vegetables and cereals after the third day can be beneficial.
